One reason I hate on-line shopping: how I paid $8 for $1.50 worth of lipstick. September 5, 2015

I am always on the hunt for a budget friendly red lipstick.  I think I've covered that pretty well on this blog.  I have some reds in the higher price point, but honestly, they aren't better.  They're great, but they aren't better.  You buy a luxury brand for the name, and there is nothing wrong with that, but I could probably buy seven different reds for what my Russian Red cost, so why not?

The bad luck for me, is that once I get a red in my mind, I can't get it back out.  For instance, right now, I am dreaming about NYX in Eden, so be on the lookout for that one soon.  I know I have to slow it down, so it might be a month or so, but it's a comin.

I volunteer for market research studies, because they are usually a pretty easy way to earn so side cash, and I did a study (with Halo's help) the last few weeks on diapers.  The paycheck was pretty good, and while I knew most of it would need to go to responsible stuff, I did set aside a few dollars for a new lipstick.

I like to "window shop" on the Ulta Beauty website pretty frequently and I came across a lipstick brand called "Pixel."  It only cost $1.49, and at the time (because I hadn't located NYC Color yet) that was the least expensive I'd found.  The weird thing was that there was only one color on the website, wheras most brands have several colors.  The color shown looked like a bright red, and it was was called "Incentive."

I trotted over to my local Ulta, because $1.50 is a budget I can swing, only to find that they no longer carry it in stores.  A little internet research shows that Pixel was "budget brand" that Ulta introduced in 2013.  I guess it didn't do very well, because you cannot really find it in the stores anymore.

I should have left well enough alone when the lady at the store told me that they didn't carry it anymore, but it was stuck in my head.  I knew I could order it online, and I soon discovered that with shipping and taxes, my $1.50 lipstick would cost $8.12.  Ugh.  This is why I hate online shopping.  I hate paying shipping, and I feel like good deals turn into not such good deals.  I was almost talked out of it, but the Ulta website told me I could select some free samples to come with it. Score!

I had a choice between fragrance samples, skincare samples, or "surprise" samples.  Who doesn't love a surprise? I picked that one.

It finally showed up a week later. Yeah. A week.  Not impressed Ulta shipping!  And my surprise samples?  Coupons for microdermabrasion.  It did not get better from there.  This lipstick isn't red.  Well, I guess its red adjacent, but it is almost orange.  ORANGE.  I have red hair.  ORANGE.

Its a thick tube, which itself is pretty, and the lipstick does live up to its "lip butter" name, it slides on really well. It is verrrry sheer, and with the first few swipes, there is barely any color.  It really has to be layered and built up.

I may, in future, try wearing it as a tinted gloss, and just be careful to not build up the color, because it is not flattering on me at all.
Orange.

So... my review of Pixel... isn't great.  I guess this is the only color still made, and while it glides on nicely, and has a pleasant sort of tangerine-y scent, its pretty orange.  I am not sure who would be flattered by this color, but if you think you might be, this is where you find it.  Though I am sure there are colors that are easier to come by, and where you don't pay almost eight times as much in shipping as the product itself.  So, maybe skip it, is what I am saying.
