Red Lipstick Review: Crimson by Clinique
My amazing friend Sonya gave me the most awesome birthday present a few weeks back! I don't know why I haven't reviewed it prior to today, but better late than never!
I have to say, Sonya knows me so well, and she knows what I love. I was so excited on my birthday to open up a bag and find not only this bright red lipstick, but also a matching lip pencil. Lip pencils are really important when it comes to red lipstick, because red, of all the colors, will be the quickest to run for the hills. Heaven is in the details!
I have long been a Clinique fan. They are, by far, my favorite department store brand. Probably because when I was first allowed to wear makeup, my mom took me to the Clinique counter. My mom, like my husband, is all about quality over quantity, and she believes in having a few good products. She also passed down to me that Clinique is a product that won't upset one's skin, which I have generally found to be true. They also create my favorite fragrance, Happy. I don't know if Sonya knew that, or if it was just a lucky guess, but Clinique is right up my alley.
I did a quick internet search just now for the price, which is typically something I would not do with a gift, but for the sake of being informative in this review. The internet tells me that a tube of this will run you about $17, so it is toward the higher end of the spectrum in terms of price point. I can say, you do get a lot for your money. I opened my bag this morning and I had four red lip colors in the bag. The Clinique is in the silver tube, and you can see how big it is next to the gold Besame tube.
The Clinique tube is heavy in my hand, and there is a lot in there. This tube will last me awhile.
I will be very honest, Crimson is not a color I would have chosen for myself. Having said that, I am so glad Sonya picked it for me. I've been so hung up on my blue-reds, that I have tended to really avoid the orangy-reds, thinking they would not suit my skin tone. When I opened this tube, and the matching lip liner, I was first struck by how BRIGHT they are. I tend to go for the darker brick reds, and I have such pink skin, I never thought an orange red would look good on me.
As it turns out, I love it. I love red. All red. And this has become one of my favorite shades. I will say for a color that describes itself as matte, it slides on like a dream. I think it slides on easier than the Besame or the MAC, which are the other lipsticks I have in that pricepoint. It doesn't settle into the lip at all, and really, one swipe is sufficient. Sometimes I go a little crazy and put on more than one layer and it can get to look a little costumey. It would make an amazing stage lipstick.
I have worn it both with the lip pencil and without. I have also worn the lip pencil on its own. The lip pencil, of course, is stickier, since its meant to hold lipstick in. I have tried to set the lip pencil with powder, but it turns a purpley color that I don't enjoy, so I stopped doing it.
The Clinique doesnt run like MAC does, but it is very touchy and transfers to everything. It doesnt smell like anything at all, and it feels really good on my lips. Mostly, I love its brightness and I tend to wear it with primary colors to really help it pop. Overall, its is a fantastic orangy red, which I have learned not to shy away from as a pink skinned red head. I will also say that the bright reds pop against darker skin tones, so I think this would look divine on darker skinned women as well.
As usual, Clinique delivers a great product!
