Lipstick is giving me my life these days.
Another post on lipstick? Yep. Red lipstick. Again. What's left to say?
We'll see, won't we?
My mom doesn't like my red lipstick. She doesn't like it when I wear makeup, she never has. She tells me all the time how I am still a kid and I don't need it, despite all the creams that say "anti-aging" that I own. The last few Mary Kay parties I've been forced to attend, the hostess has asked me if I am concerned about fine lines and wrinkles, but to my mom, I'm still just a baby.
We went over there on St. Patrick's Day, and she asked me WHY did I have red lipstick on.
I don't know. It seemed festive. And I love Peggy Carter. And red lipstick is my superhero cape...
She told me I didn't need it, and went back to rocking Halo. And the next day my dad brought me a comic strip about red lipstick. So, I think he likes it. I like it.
I still want to own some of Peggy's Besame Red Velvet one day, but I am also expanding my search for other perfect reds.
Arguably, the most famous red lipsticks of the modern era (and my research on the topic in recent weeks is considerable) are both by MAC. The lighter of the two is Ruby Woo and the darker is Russian Red. Behold:
I don't wear red lipstick every day though. I'm working up to it, and hopefully soon, I will have a few more reds in my repertoire, but in the mean time I do wear more natural stuff sometimes. In gloss, there is really nothing better than beauty rush from Victoria's Secret.
There are lots of great colors, but my favorite is called Oatstanding. Unfortunately, it isn't made any more, and when they discontinued it, I bought up every tube in the metro. I am forever finding them in all of my bags and in the car. I have one in my desk. It looks really dark and sparkly in the tube, but isn't in real life:
Its super unfortunate that its discontinued, because it looks good on everyone. I don't care what color your skin is, what color your hair is, you could rock this color. Sometimes there are unopened tubes sold on ebay or something of that ilk. If you see one, snap it up, you will not be sad. And it will give you pretty lips while you take a short break from your search for the perfect red.

The Lipstick Fairy Arrives:
Now that I have actually seen it on myself, I wanted to write a real review.
Its safe to say that I am full on addicted to red lipstick, and I have added several more, at various price points, to the list of lipsticks I want to try. But Russian Red was always near the top of my list, second only to Besame Red Velvet. The only reason I went with this one, is because its actually sold in Kansas City, making it about half the price of the Red Velvet.
Here are my first thoughts: it smells and tastes great. It has a light vanilla scent. It doesn't feel cakey or sticky, despite being really thick, and very, very pigmented. On the downside it is super bleed-y and ends up all over my face if I am not careful. I think it would be better with a lip pencil, and from what I have read, the MAC Cherry pencil is the way to go. The dark red does make my teeth look super white though:
Overall, its a really fun color and I will definitely still wear it, except maybe not on an every day basis. If it was something more formal, this would be a go-to for sure. And maybe sometimes other times too. This is a really well made product, and I will definitely go back to MAC again.
Ruby Woo up next?

While I probably need to own them both, I need Russian Red immediately. That color is the stuff 1940's screen sirens are made of. Its the bluest red I've seen, which would look good on me because I have cool tones. Not sure if you're a "warm" or "cool" toned person? Flip your wrist over and look at the veins on the inside. If they are greenish in hue you are warm, and if they are more blue, you are cool. Plan Accordingly. Don't say you never learned anything here. You're welcome. The other nice thing about this blue red lipsticks is that the more blue they have, the whiter your teeth look. So, not only does wearing red lipstick make you feel more kickass, it will also look like you just had your teeth bleached. Its a win all around.
What I found even more humorous is that Real Simple, arguably my mom's favorite magazine, ran an article on timeless red lipsticks. And wouldn't you know it. What made the cut?
Russian Red :)
It also has a shade from Estee Lauder on the list. While I have never know Mom to wear red lipstick, she did have some EL lipstick when I was a kid, that I would put on when I played in her makeup. I instantly flash back to Mom's makeup when I see that gold tube.

with the car seat in the back. That's how I roll...
it was super grey outside but you can still see it.
Honestly, it pains me to say it, but this shade might be just a touch dark on me. I think it photographs really, really nicely, but when I see myself in person I feel like its almost a little dark. I think I might want to try the Ruby Woo too, and see if that looks better on me.
Last night, we went to a party for my dear friend Sonya's gender reveal party (yay for baby boys!) and I was super dressed down in boyfriend jeans and a great t-shirt. But since I had this red lip on, I still felt dressed up and like my face was "finished." I got a lot of compliments on it.
