Peggy Carter and my Love Affair with Red Lipstick- March 9, 2015

I love Peggy Carter.  Love.  I think Hayley Atwell, (yay for sharing a name!) the actress who plays her, is fantastic, but mostly I love Peggy.  She is the only superheroine that I can think of that isn't called to save the world or beat up the bad guys in a leather catsuit and stilettos.  (Also, come to think of it, the villain on "Agent Carter" is also female, and also kick ass, but anyway...)

Peggy is gorgeous.  You need only look at Hayley Atwell to know that's true. But Peggy doesn't "win" because of her looks.  She doesn't beguile the baddies, she legit takes them down.  Peggy Carter is smart and capable and her looks are the least interesting thing about her.  She saves the world in a suit, and she knows her worth without finding it in a man.  She is a whole world of win.

For the last 8 weeks our family has enjoyed watching the "Agent Carter" miniseries, and I truly hope it will be back for a second season because it is really good.  Its campy but at the same time, really well written, there is enough period action to satisfy my love of all things 1940's, and the whole cast is really spot on.  If you didn't watch it, I am sad for you.  Hopefully its on hulu or amazon or something, because you should not miss out.  Also, you should probably re-watch Captain America, like, ten times basically back to back like I have.  Hayley Atwell is a gem, I'm telling you.

One thing I love about Peggy is the despite the fact that she doesn't trade on her looks, she is still very feminine.  The part I love most? Her bright red lipstick.  Love. Girlcrush.  So much.  Hayley Atwell very helpfully tweeted that Peggy's shade is Besame in Red Velvet:

As I tell my children to do, I've put it on my birthday list.  Because even if it sucks and I look like a clown in it-- look how pretty!  The packaging alone is delicious.  I love girly stuff, and this is girly.

Peggy's red lipstick is all I've been able to think about.  I've written before about how I am new to the make up game, and red lipstick isn't for the faint of heart.  And I am super pale, with auburn hair and light blue eyes, and when I've tried red lipstick in the past, it has not ended well.

I have since learned that I should be wearing a blue red, instead of an orange red. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but that is what I have learned.  Because I don't have unlimited funds to just buy up a bunch of red lipsticks, I did a vast search of the interwebs (what did we do before the internet, seriously??) and made a list of the shades that would either suit my coloring or apparently looks good on everyone.

Don't believe me?

In case you can't read my writing, here's what it says:
Besame Red Velvet (no one said this would look good on me, I just love Peggy)
Revlon Lip Butter in Red Velvet
MAC in Russian Red
MAC Cherry lip pencil
Sephora Cream lipstain in All Red
Clinique in Black Honey
Besame Chocolate Kiss
Urban Decay in F-Bomb (this one got particularly good reviews)
MAC Dubonnet

All of those are outside of what I can afford to pay for lipstick that might look insane on me.  The solution? e.l.f.

the very best red lipstick $3 can buy. e.l.f. in Rich Red.

I kinda fell in love.

my best Peggy Carter face.  With the car seat in the back lol

I wasn't driving at the time.  Just throwing that out there.

I put it on in my car before I had to go inside for a meeting.  I checked my face in the bathroom mirror just to make sure I didn't look like a loon.  I don't think I did.  I kind of love the way it looks.  And I kind of love how it makes me feel.  Its impossible not to feel kick ass in red lipstick.  You have your life under control in red lipstick.  At least it feels that way.  Maybe that was Peggy Carter's secret all along.
