If you don't have a bottle of coconut oil in your house, you are missing out. It's amazing and you can use it for everything. Ours came from Trader Joe's (which I also love) but you can buy it almost anywhere. And use it for everything.
It is one of the healthiest and tastiest cooking oils, but that isn't even the beginning. If you have mixed babies, which I, of course, do, it is the best hair conditioner. It doesn't have any chemicals, and no alcohol, which most hair products, even those meant to moisturize have. Plus it makes my sweet little babies' heads smell all coconutty.
It's worth mentioning here that I love the smell of coconut. It makes me feel like its summer and I am on vacation somewhere tropical and beachy and fabulous. So the smell, for me, is a plus in its own right. If you don't like the smell of coconut... use this stuff anyway. Seriously, its so great.
It is also fantastic lotion. My skin stays soft all day. No ashiness at all. My kids have super sensitive skin, and even hypo-allergenic baby lotion breaks them out. My sister's kids were the same way, and she lotioned them with olive oil. Olive oil works just as well, by the way, I just like coconut better, because it smells like a beach vacation rather than an Italian dinner. Maybe you'd prefer that, I don't know your life. For me, its all coconut.
In the same vein as being great lotion, its great diaper crème. Its a great barrier method, and has kept Halo's booty in good form her whole life. About a month ago, we were out of coconut oil and so I used actual baby diaper cream on her. One time. It broke her out so badly, and for so long, that it was finally a prescription medication that finally cleared it up. Lesson learned.
And here's my new favorite one:
This is me swishing around a mouthful of coconut oil. We're oil pulling around here. I have been meaning to do it for ages. My feelings on holistic medicine are mixed. I'm a big fan of western medicine, but I also believe that we can pull so many things out of the Earth and use them to naturally aid in good health. The scientific community would have us believe there are no benefits to oil pulling while eastern medicine would have us believe it is the answer to all of our health problems. The reality, like most things, is probably somewhere in the middle.
What is oil pulling, you ask?
The theory behind this home treatment is that as the oil swishes around teeth and gums it ‘pulls’ bacteria and other debris into the oil, detoxifying the mouth. Our mouths are laboratories breeding billions of nasty critters: viruses, bacteria (Streptococcus), parasites and fungi (Candida) and all of their toxic waste products. All of the above contribute to gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other oral problems. This toxicity is also held to be at least partially responsible for many other diseases, including heart disease, arthritis, eczema and chronic infections. Some oils seem to help with weight loss.
Getting rid of these unwanted troublemakers in our mouths is one less problem for our immune systems to have to deal with. If this alternative remedy did nothing other than aid our immune systems (it does a lot more!), it would be worth doing for that alone.
Oil pulling is an ancient natural medical treatment for many ailments. It also has cosmetic benefits, including whiter teeth and clearer skin and in addition It aids the immune system. This home remedy is safe, easy to do and effective.

I have been meaning to try it for ages to help my teeth. I have really weak teeth. I have had to have several crowns and have lost two teeth in totality. Though I am religious in brushing and flossing, I tend to avoid preventative health care, which has proven to be a poor choice more than once.
I still hate the dentist, and I need to find a new one, but I have told myself for ages that I needed to try oil pulling as well, because what could it hurt? I have one friend, Victoria, who does it and she swears by it. And her teeth are whiter.
So, here is my experience.
Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so you have to kind of chew it up to make it a liquid. It has a very low viscosity, so it doesn't take long at all, but for a minute or so, you have chunky, chewy oil in your mouth. You have to keep it in for 15-20 minutes for it to work ( I do it while I cook dinner, or while I watch TV) and it's not unpleasant, but it isn't a mouth party either. It gets easier once its melted for sure.
So, you swish swish swish, and it feels like sort of a thick, non-minty mouthwash. It takes some getting used to, but overall it isn't so hard. The first time I did it, spitting it out was the worst part and I gagged, but by the second time, I had the hang of it. It is important to spit it into the trash can, because coconut oil will re-harden back into a solid very quickly, and it can clog your pipes. Don't say I didn't warn you.
What do I think of it? I do think my mouth feels very clean after I spit it out. I have noticed that I don't really have bad morning breath. I definitely think my teeth look whiter. And it would make sense. Harder plaque on your teeth would not be water soluable, but it would probably be fat soluable, so may the oil really can swish things off my teeth.
I'd say do it for a week and see if you aren't hooked. Especially with newer, whiter teeth. Coconut oil really can do anything, and it can be yours for about $7. Its an amazing deal.
