Its no secret that Friday was rough day. Rough. I'm still getting over it and probably will be for awhile. As usual though, my friends and family have rallied around me in the most incredible way. I really hit the family lottery (both with the family I got and the friends who are family.) If wealth was judged on loved ones alone, I'd be Bill Gates. My mom saved me yesterday, as mothers usually do. She is really just the best, and I will never be able to repay all of the sacrifice she's made on my behalf. Family is forever, which means I get to be her daughter forever. I am so thankful.
Today is a new day though, and we're putting on our big girl panties and moving forward with life. Its also Mother's Day, which for me means the day that I get to celebrate the three amazing humans that call me Mom. It probably wont be too wild of a day, but I think its shaping up to be a nice one. I'll write another post soon about the sweet necklace and beautiful crafts I got (I wondered why Lucas came home with glitter in his hair Friday) but for today, what I really want to talk about is one present in particular.
It was a plain brown cardboard box (men and boymen were running this mission, so wrapping paper was not at the top of anyone's list) but my heart did a happy dance when I saw this:
Its bright and early around here and we are all still in our pajamas. I really did, as Beyoncé says, just wake up like this. I did want to put some on immediately, and try it out, but I am also in pj's, not a whipstitch of makeup, no hair, no nothing... so this is what it looks like on me, first thing in the morning.
I love the color. Love. In person I feel like its a hair darker, but it photographs pretty well. Its a blue red, so again with those white teeth. It goes on matte, and it stays put. It definitely feels thicker than my other reds. The MAC Russian Red, which is probably one of the most sold reds in the entire industry bleeds and feathers all to hell, but this makeup is listed as feather proof and I believe it. It would still probably need to be set with powder to be totally smudge proof, but so far, so good. It really doesn't smell like anything, which is a bit disappointing, because it seems like other high end lip products do have some fragrance that, so far, I have really enjoyed. But, its also doesn't smell waxy or bad, so it certainly isn't something that would stop me from buy more. It runs on really smooth, its very creamy for a matte and you really only need one coat. A little goes a long way.
The tip runs to a point all the way across, which is different from other lipsticks. I don't know if that is something that is true to the era or a choice that Gabriela Hernandez made, but its a bit harder at first to figure out how to do.
I mean, its not like rocket science or anything, but I have never used one shaped like this before. Its sort of like trying to line your lips with a calligraphy pen. If you turn too much one way, the line gets very thick or very thin. Its something I am happy to learn to get the hang of. Besame lipsticks (which are primarily shades of red, because red is the best) are touted as not needing a liner to keep them in place, and I believe that to be true as well. MAC is the only other high end brand I own, and the formula of this lipstick makes the MAC look like a lip gloss in terms of texture.

If you read this blog at all you know my deep and abiding love for Peggy Carter and for Besame Cosmetics. Its a fabulous company, started by a woman of color, who makes vintage makeup products that are cruelty and gluten free. And my all time favorite superhero, Agent Peggy Carter, wears them. Overtime, my plan is to only wear Besame makeup, but its kind of expensive, so I will have to add a little at a time. But I knew, and have talked everyone in this house's ear off, about the first thing I wanted to be Agent Carter's lipstick, Besame Red Velvet.
my two loves: Red Velvet and diet coke
It came in this delicate little box that I almost didn't want to open, and will definitely save, mostly because its too pretty to get rid of. And somehow, though the lipstick is the exact size I pictured, the box is smaller. Its so, so pretty though, embossed in this shiny gold. The packaging definitely lives up to the vintage name.
As an aside, I wanted to share a picture of the actual store in Burbank that I lifted off the internet to help you get a better feel of the whole vintage atmosphere they are going for. It really feels like you've gone back in time, and the 1940's were such an amazing time for the beauty aesthetic.
How cute is this? I can't even...
I finally did open the package and the tube itself slid into my hand. It is metal and heavy and feels very much like what my grandmother used to have, and not the plastic tubes of the modern era. You have to pull a bit to get it open, and it makes that metal POP sound.
I was so excited to actually open it, and as usual, my little camera phone does not do it justice. It really is so, so pretty. I even let Halo try it:
